Smartphone companies tend to capture US market before any other country to make a mark in the industry, but Sony Corp (ADR)(NYSE:SNE) doesn’t seem to follow that pattern. When it announced Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact at CES 2015, many experts had thought Sony would consider launching these models in the United States along with other markets. To everyone’s surprise, Sony prolonged the delay only to launch Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact in the United States now.
Insights of The Matter
It’s not the first time when Sony has done something like that. It has a modest presence in the United States market and sells fewer handsets as compared to other countries. Talking about the newest Xperia handsets, Sony said that customers could buy them from all the major retailers like Best Buy, Amazon and B&H.
Unlike iPhone or any other premier handset, both Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact will be available without any carrier support and work on GSM standards, leaving At &T and T-Mobile as the two options for customers to choose from.
Sony has decided to price these models in such a way that the maximum number of users can be lured to buy them. A report claims that Xperia Z5 will be available for $599.99 whereas Xperia Z5 Compact will cost $499.99. Considering the fact that Samsung, LG and other rival brands make available their unlocked smartphones at much lesser price than the one offered by Sony, chances of Xperia handsets selling in huge numbers are not much.
The senior management team of the company is delighted to announce the launch of these two handsets. According to Kunihiko Shiomi, North America President, Sony Mobile Communications, it’s great to launch these two models in US market. Going forward, Sony will launch more such handsets in the market to explore growing trends in the United States.
