BioSolar Inc (OTCMKTS:BSRC) developer firm of advanced energy storage technology and equipments, reported that it has jointly filed an application with the UCSB to obtain Super Battery Technology patent. This will form the platform for the company’s growth in coming period. The inventors list includes Dr. David Vonlanthen and Dr. Alan Heeger of UCSB, and Dr. David Lee, the Company’s CEO and Dr. Stanley Levy, the Chief Technology Officer with BioSolar.
The know-how
A battery has two major parts, an anode and a cathode, that work together as the negative and positive sides. Today’s latest lithium-ion battery has limited storage capacity of cathode. At the same time, anode can store much more compared to cathode. BioSolar is trying to make a high capacity cathode that can help to utilize the storage capacity of anodes. The battery manufacturers can use the high capacity, low cost and high power BioSolar cathode with conventional anodes to create a super lithium-ion battery.
The process
The conventional cathodes utilize lithium-ion intercalation chemistry which is an extremely slow process. BioSolar’s high-capacity cathode makes use of the fast redox-reaction features of polymers to allow rapid charge and discharge. The super battery built on the same know how will have the capacity to increase the range of a Tesla electric car. It will not only increase the range but will also cost four times less and work for a longer time. The battery will have the capacity to cross the $100 per kWh cost barrier that is essential for wide adoption of energy storage. Achieving it would result the companies to reach the “holy grail” for utilities, in terms of energy storage.
