Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is planning to enhance the screen sizes of its iPhones as from next year. Korean news site ETNews reports that the company will offer large and small model sizes compared to those currently available in the market.
Apple to launch new 6.7-inch screen iPhone next year
The iPhone maker is working to introduce a smaller 4.4 inch iPhones and a 6.1-inch screen iPhone in 2020. Equally, the company will produce a new iPhone with a 6.7-inch screen, which will be its largest screen yet. This year the company launched the iPhone 11, which has a 6.1-inch screen, iPhone 11 whose screen is 5.8 inches, and the iPhone 11 Pro Max that has a 6.5-inch screen.
The company has ordered 4.4 inches and 6.7 inches of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens from Samsung. They intend to use the same OLED tech as the one used in this year’s iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max models. Equally, they will source the OLED display panels for the 6.1 inch iPhones from LG.
The use of OLED displays means that the company will now move from using LCD screens that it has been using in the past two years. LCDs are cheaper relative to OLED screens. However, it doesn’t have the same broad color range, deep blacks or bright whites as OLED that make it appealing when viewing photos and movies.
Apple to release a cheaper iPhone early next year
According to ETNews, the company will likely introduce four iPhones indicating that a model will support 5G networks. TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who covers Apple indicated that the 2020 flagship iPhones would be available with 5G modems. Kuo indicates that the company will unveil a cheaper iPhone at $399 called iPhone SE2 in Q1 2020. The other phones could mostly be available around September when the company traditionally unveils its new products.
The iPhone SE2 will use the iPhone 8 form factor, but it will most likely have new chips as those available in iPhone 11 series. The current iPhone 8 has a screen display of 4.7 inches.
