General Motors Company (NYSE:GM) has recalled more than 550,000 trucks because of hot gas from their high-tech seat belts that can cause a fire.
General Motors recalls trucks because of the seatbelt that can cause a fire
Normally most recalls through the US NHTSA are for issues that seem to be normal like airbag issues, rollaway risks, and faulty builds. However, the issue with the trucks seems to be more serious as the belts could cause a fire in the right conditions.
The recall covers GMC Sierra 1500 trucks and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models from model years 2019 and 2020. Also, the recall includes some Sierra 2500, 2020 Silverado, as well as 3500 heavy-duty trucks. The recall affects North America, and out of the total recalls, only 1% of the trucks have the defect.
The company indicates that it employs a small explosion that can release the piston tightening the belt before a crash. However, the explosion could release hot gas via an opening in a bracket that could set the carpet on fire. The opening was meant as an assembly locator hole that was never utilized. After a clash causing the seatbelt pretensioner to deploy, there might be burning or smoke from the base of the B-pillar.
Two Fires reported but no injuries
So far, there have been two cases of fire reported, but there were no injuries. The company indicated that it received notification about the fire in July and began an investigation in September. The company announced the recall on November 7, and dealers will fix the problem by closing the opening in the bracket. This will enable the gases to move away from the carpet, thus preventing ignition of the gases. General Motors has indicated that it will avail owner letter notification dates once available, and it could begin early next month.
The recall from comes as the company is suing Fiat Chrysler for reportedly buying off the United Auto Workers union to gain an advantage. The lawsuit alleges that Fiat paid millions in bribes to gain advantage and get concessions in three labor agreements.
