More than 20,000 high school students in Florida will receive free high-speed wireless internet service and some free mobile devices. This was said today in an announcement made by Claudio Hidalgo, Region President for Sprint Corp (NYSE:S). Sprint and the Sprint Foundation will be engaging in this particular exercise in a bid to close the “Homework Gap” that has always existed in the state.
Every participating high school student in Florida will be taking home either a free hotspot device , tablet, smartphone, as well as a 3GB of high-speed LTE data per month .This will be over a period of four years.
Asides from that, they will be able to access the unlimited data plan which will be unveiled at 2G speeds if usage exceeds 3GB in any particular month. Those students that will get a smartphone will have the choice to use it as a hotspot.
In the State of Florida, about 70 percent of the teachers usually give assignments requiring learners to use the web. However, almost 5 million U.S. families with school-aged children lack the required broadband access in their homes which ends up complicating matters for students. A recent report outlined that in Miami-Dade a significant number of households do not have access to internet connection.
Sprint Corp is calling upon all the well-wishers to come forward and support the program. They can be able to make their contributions via their credit cards. Anyone that wants to donate a mobile device can do so online or via Sprint stores.
There are various ways to support the 1Million Project and the recycling and reselling of devices are part of them.
Claudio Hidalgo opines, “No child should struggle to finish school projects because they lack access to the proper technology. Sprint wants to do its part to make the learning process a little easier and this technology is key to unlocking students’ highest potential.”
M-DCPS Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho said that they were commited to establishing a continous leasrning environment that would allow studcent to capitalize of the wide array of the academic enrichment opportunities.
