Tesla Inc. (NYSE:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk has indicated that in future the company will have a powerful powertrain option of Model S, Model X and the Roadster sports car that will push speed and acceleration beyond the present high bar famous as the Ludicrous mode.

“Plaid” Model a year away from production

On Wednesday Musk tweeted that the only thing beyond Ludicrous is Plaid which is a teases to an advanced performing vehicle and also a sign to the movie Spaceballs.

The new advanced performing version of Roadster, Model S, and Model X will have what the CEO called a Plaid powertrain which is a year away from production. Musk indicated that the Plaid powertrain would have three more motors which are one more than the dual motor system currently in Model X and Model S.

The Plaid powertrain will not be available for Model Y, and Model 3.Musk confirmed that the new Model will cost more than the current offerings but much less than the cost of competitors about the latest Porsche Tayacan Turbo that costs around $150,000.

Plaid Model S faster at Laguna Seca

The Plaid Model S made a debut at the Laguna Seca raceway lapping the California road course in a minute and 36 seconds. Tesla indicated that 96 seconds is a second faster than the “record for a four-door sedan” at Laguna Seca.  However, Laguna Seca indicated that track officials were not in charge of the Tesla testing. Usually, official records happen during sanctioned events with the sanctioning body officiating.

In 2017 when Tesla launched the new Roadster, the CEO said that it would have three motors.  He said it would be able to accelerate from 0 miles to 60 miles per hour in just 1.9 seconds and achieve a top speed of 250mph. The Roadster will go into production next year. If the plan materializes, it will be an essential option for Model S, which since the introduction of Model 3 has seen sales dip.

Musk has asserted that the Model S and X won’t receive any major refresh. However, if Tesla is to maintain demand for new trims such as Plaid powertrain will be useful.
