Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) unveiled Project Dojo a while back as part of its push towards refining self-driving technology but not much has emerged about it until Elon Musk recently mentioned it.
The Tesla CEO hinted through a tweet that Project Dojo might help Tesla to reach its goal of creating a completely reliable self-driving vehicle system. The electric vehicle manufacturer wants to have the system ready by 2020 which is just a few months away. Tesla has not been vocal about the developments but Musk maintains his optimism in achieving those goals.
Tesla created Project Dojo as part of its plans to develop a computer that will study footage of humans driving so that it can improve on the company’s autonomous vehicle system. However, the company has been tight-lipped regarding the project. Musk touched briefly on Project Dojo on Autonomy Day.
“We do have a major program at Tesla which we don’t have enough time to talk about today called “Dojo”. That’s a super powerful training computer,” stated Musk.
The Tesla CEO added that Project Dojo will handle a large amount of data which will be used to improve the company’s autonomous driving technology. Tesla is expected to release further details about the project and its progress during its next update which will be released in 2020. It might be too soon to tell but Project Dojo might offer massive progress over Tesla’s current Autopilot system.
Why project Dojo is a big deal for Tesla
Tesla is one of the few tech companies that have been developing autonomous vehicle technology. However, tech companies are currently competing to be the first to have the fully autonomous tech on the roads. A Win for Tesla would be great especially towards building its brand image and also to boost investor confidence.
Project Dojo might help Tesla secure the lead against its competitors in the self-driving vehicle technology segment. The project gives Tesla a competitive edge over its rivals by allowing the autonomous driving system to learn road conditions, thus making it more effective. It also means that Tesla has a chance of living up to the promise of delivering a ready system by next year.
