As the debate around the crypto industry continues to raise different views, more popular individuals continue to join the bandwagon.
U.S singer and songwriter Akon becomes the most recent celebrity to join the cryptocurrency world. The rapper who is well known for the famous hit, smack that, announced on June 19, the creation of his own cryptocurrency.
Akon Crypto City
The rapper who originates from Senegal believes that his crypto, Akoin, could be the savior of Africa. He revealed that he intends to use Akoin as part of a giant 2,000 acre-development called Akon crypto city. He made the announcement at this year’s Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
The new Akon Crypto City has been described as a city based entirely on crypto technology. It will be run with Akoin as the engine of its transactions. It promises to integrate leading smart city designs with a black canvas for cryptonizing our daily human and business exchanges, towards investing a radical new way of existence.
Akon who was optimistic of the whole project stated that, he thinks that blockchain and cryptocurrency could be the savior for Africa in many ways because it brings power back to the people and brings the security back into the currency system and also allows the people to utilize it in ways where they can advance themselves and not allow government to do those things that are keeping them down.
Humanitarian projects
The rapper has been heavily involved in humanitarian projects mostly concentrated in Africa. He is currently involved in the Lighting Africa Project which was launched in 2014, with an aim of bringing solar power to Africa.
Akon’s humanitarian projects in Africa seems to be what prompted the Senegalese President, Macky Sall to donate to the rapper, the 2,000 acres where the Akon Crypto City will be located.
Akon’s strategy seems to be outsourcing the whole technical expertise of creating, launching and running Akoin. He stated he was responsible for coming up with the concepts and letting the geeks figure it out.
The songwriter joins a growing list of well-known figures who are taking to cryptos. McAfee announced recently that he would be releasing his own fiat currency backed by cryptocurrency.
